Pulmonology

Pulmonology, also known as respiratory medicine, is a subspecialty of internal medicine focused on the health of the respiratory system, including the lungs, airways, and respiratory muscles. Pulmonologists diagnose and treat conditions that affect breathing and lung function.

Common Pulmonary Diseases and Conditions:

  1. Asthma: A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.
  2. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A group of lung conditions, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, that cause breathing difficulties due to airflow obstruction.
  3. Lung Cancer: Malignancies originating in the lung tissue, which can be primary or metastatic.
  4. Pneumonia: An infection of the lungs that causes inflammation and filling of the alveoli with fluid or pus, leading to cough, fever, and difficulty breathing.
  5. Tuberculosis (TB): A bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affecting the lungs but potentially impacting other organs.

Pulmonologists work in various settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialized care centers, often collaborating with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for patients with respiratory conditions.
